“The more we expect of ourselves and one another,
the more we can achieve”
Design Technologhy (D.T)
At Staplehurst School we believe that the teaching of Design and Technology is fundamental in equipping pupils to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Our highly progressive, in-depth Design and Technology curriculum promotes curiosity and a thirst for learning. At Staplehurst we implement the Design and Technology Association’s ‘Projects on a Page’ curriculum. Through this, pupils learn about structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food & nutrition. Pupils build on a range of practical and technical skills whilst learning how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative and tenacious. Carefully planned sequences of lessons provide pupils with opportunities to design, make and evaluate functional quality products to solve real, relevant problems.
Our teaching at Staplehurst supports pupils to develop their ability to enquire, ask questions, take risks, reflect and evaluate. Opportunities are provided to nurture pupils’ creativity and innovation. Pupils develop their resilience throughout an iterative process; analysing and testing their products. They are encouraged to recognise their ‘marvellous mistakes’ and suggest improvements to be made so it is suitable for the intended user. At Staplehurst we implement our Design and Technology curriculum through the teaching of discrete lessons and a fully immersive day for each project. This enables pupils to apply the skills and knowledge previously modelled and practised. Each year pupils also participate in a school-wide STEM project that provides a design brief for them to work to. This promotes analytical thinking, collaborative working and finding solutions to problems. By the time pupils leave Staplehurst, they are well equipped to understand the different factors that contribute to complex design decisions. They have acquired the skills, knowledge and motivation to continue their journey as young designers and engineers into future learning and careers.
